There were a lot of great HS Seniors this season   3/8/2010 9:32:16 score: 0      hide

Between the four classifications I counted a total of 30 HS Seniors this season who placed 1st at their respective State wrestling tournament. That's more than half of the weight classes which were won by Seniors this past season.

Included among those 30 HS Seniors there were FOUR who went undefeated this past season.  They are:

1. Brock Banta - South Fremont HS - 41-0 at 125 lbs. (3-A)
2. Trevor Rupp - Pocatello HS - 39-0 at 215 lbs (4-A)
3. Derek Garrett - Valley HS - 39-0 at 135 lbs. (2-A/1-A)
4. Jed Ferguson - Parma HS - 34-0 at 160 lbs (2-A/1-A)

There were also three HS Seniors who lost only one match this season.  They are:

1. Charlie McMartin - Capital HS - 55-1 at 160 lbs (5-A)
2. Zak Slotten - Twin Falls HS - 30-1 at 171 lbs (4-A)
3. Roman Fry - Garden Valley HS - 29-1 at 171 lbs (2-A/1-A)

Plus there were also six HS Seniors who lost only two matches this season:

Christian Denny - Idaho Falls HS - 49-2 at 215 lbs (5-A)
Brandon Richardson - Lakeland HS - 45-2 at 152 lbs (4-A)
Will Keeter - Twin Falls HS - 41-2 at 140 lbs (4-A)
Ryan Packard - Columbia HS - 38-2 at 145 lbs (4-A)
Beaugh Meyer - Capital HS - 33-2 at 285 lbs (5-A)
Dylan White - Timberlake HS - 33-2 at 285 lbs (3-A)

There were also four HS Seniors who had only 3 losses last season.  Namely Holden Packard of Mtn. View HS - 46-3 at 5-A 145 lbs, Luke Weaver of Salmon HS - 40-3 at 4-A 152 lbs, Sam Bishop of North Fremont HS - 39-3 at 2-A/1-A 130 lbs and Taylor Walker of Firth HS - 43-3 at 2-A/1-A 140 lbs.

In other words, more than half of those 30 HS Seniors from Idaho who took 1st place at their State tournament had no more than 3 losses last season (17 of 30).

The question now though is where are these outstanding HS Seniors from Idaho going next?  Or rather how many of them will go on to wrestle in college?  And where?

Jed Ferguson has been asked to visit Mesa St. , Western State and USC Pueblo in Colorado. I think he is going to visit over spring break.

I'm now curious to know how it's possible for McMartin to have a record of 55-1 this past season when it was my understanding that all Idahio HS wrestling teams are limited to a maximum of only 16 dates on their regular season schedule and no individual or team can compete in more than 5 tournaments during their regular season.  Even if he competed in 5 matches in each of the 5 tournaments that would be no more than 25 matches in tournaments and that would leave only 11 other (dual) matches) available - for a maximum of 36 matches total (prior to district and State).  Yet, somehow McMartin has a record of 55-1 ???

NF, you can compete in up to 6 tournaments if you only schedule 15 total dates. With 7 of those 9 dual dates being tri-meets. there is 14 matches. If the team wresles in in more then two dual tournaments where the team gets 10 matches in two days There is another 20. Then 5 matches in 4 other tournaments that is 20 matches. Doesnt Capital go to Reno where he could have picked up more matches. In the past there have been kids with 60 to 70 matches look back two years at the Aberdeen kids records.

The format of those tournaments can drastically alter the number of matches reached. Dual Team Tourneys are highly preferred these days specifically because they CAN assure more than a bracketed individual tourney. Buck's Bags, River City, etc. are examples of these. Rollie Lane also is a hybrid, with pod wrestling on Day 1, then the 16 man bracket on Day 2. Also, the 'other' category is not limited to duals. Tri-Meets can also inflate mat time. All of these combined can help a wrestler get well over 40 matches prior to Districts.

NF, most coaches try to schedule double duels rather than just duels. So in your example you could get 22 matches, not just 11.

Thanks for the (multiple) explanations.  I guess that makes sense.  However it is a little eye-popping to see someone's record listed as 55-1 in one season of HS wrestling.

Back to the original topic of this thread - does anyone have any idea where McMartin might be going to college next season?  Thanks again.

McMartin is on waiting list for Stanford to be accepted and will talk scholarship once he is accepted. Beaugh Meyer signed for football at ISU

That's likely to be a very short conversation then (regarding a scholarship to Stanford) as they have virtually no scholarships.  I know that Spence Patrick, another local kid who ended up at Stanford a couple of years ago, has a "scholarship" for wrestling at Stanford and according to his parents that "scholarship" actually works out to cover only about 5 percent of the cost of going to Stanford, i.e., not much.  The rest of the cost is being paid by his parents.  And it isn't exactly cheap to go to school at Stanford.
