    Expand the state basketball tournament?

    in BOYS BASKETBALL FORUM

There is a movement out there pushing for the state basketball tournaments in Idaho to expand from the current three-day format to adding another round - maybe two. What do you think?

Why? If it's not broke don't fix it

After The district Tournament. Go to a single day regional 16 team play in seeded with the dist champs getting the top 4/5/6 seeds (depending on class), regional sites host single elim playin game, to guarantee the 8 team field for state the following week. best 8 teams are most likely to get in. (Find another criteria other than maxpreps, like the RPI used in WA where they use strength of schedule, margin of victory, opponent classification, opponent record, media/coaches polls)

Yes! Do it. I played in the last 1A four day tournament way back in 2008. I think bringing that back would be awesome.

I don't think it would be that difficult. The first round of 16 could be held Monday or Tuesday at the higher seeds home gym. Then seed the remaining 8 for the weekend.

I like it because it gives a strong conference on a given year an opportunity to represent most of their good teams. The 3A 6th dist boys this year is weak. But with the current system, one of those 3 schools will get one of the 8 spots and a better team in a stronger district will have to stay home.

@Killing me smalls Valley didn't beat Soda. Soda won by almost 20. Most of Valleys wins infact I think all but 3 were against mediocre 1A teams so it's not hard to believe Soda is ranked above them and I'm sure BL will finished ranked above them. BL just didn't start winning until January so they're just picking up steam. Maxpreps is fairly accurate as far as I can tell.

@Killing me smalls The MaxPreps rankings I just looked at have both B.L. and N.C. ranked above Soda. Regardless of whether you feel MaxPreps is the answer or another ranking, it is still much better than previous and gets us close. I don't disagree with you that 16 is a lot, but it gives that really good 3rd place team in a tough district a chance. The current system doesn't allow that and many times even eliminates a great 2nd place team.

So, how about we do the same as in 3A football? The winner of each district (5 districts in 3A) makes the round of eight. This leaves 3 spots. 6 teams play in this play-in round early in the week with the winners securing the remaining 3 in the round of 8. Then, seed the tournament using MaxPreps (isn't perfect but is pretty close). This MaxPreps ranking system has created a pretty good 3A football tournament the past couple of years, IMO.

@Bigfoot I stand corrected. I could’ve sworn that I saw it the other way around. These latest MaxPreps rankings are looking more accurate. It looks like it’s going to be pretty close to correct by the end. I like the idea of doing it more like football. I agree that it isn’t perfect. But it’s as close as we will get I think. Having a little play in tournament seems like a fun way to decide the final 3. It would cause some extra travel, but I think it would be worth it. We already do some rotating play in games anyway. Might as well invite the next best non conference winners and let them duke it out in a central location. Does anyone know the criteria for MaxPreps rankings? How is a good 1A weighted versus a bad 3A? That sort of thing. It’s going to change how teams schedule. If a close loss to a good 3A school is more favorable than a big win over a bottom 1A, maybe teams go for higher competition? but maybe the 3A is doing the same thing and doesn’t want to play the 2A? Could make for some interesting scheduling changes in the future. Maybe teams will travel outside of their normal radius.

Would this change the bracket To include 4 more teams? 6? I don’t think that there are enough quality teams to justify a full 16 bracket. That would have most teams in the state getting in. I do feel like 2-4 more teams per level in the tournament could be good. It seems like there are usually about that many teams who don’t make it, that I wish would have. But what sort of bracket could you use for 10-12 teams that would be fair?
