Coming down to the final few weeks of boys basketball. Thoughts on 2A? Lets talk some basketball.
2A appears to be incredible deep and balanced this year IMO. I might even say that top-bottom 2A might be better than 3A this year, especially outside of eastern Idaho.
District V looks like West Side is the top team, but they lost to Bear Lake last night, and Soda Springs is also pretty solid with some nice wins. And Malad pushed West Side to overtime last time they met looks like. Pretty wide open, but I would lean towards West Side and Soda coming out of that district, both have looked impressive in the games I've seen.
VI should be North Fremont's to lose, although they haven't had the toughest schedule and have had some close calls. But I'll take an undefeated 2 time defending state champion every time. Firth will probably wind up second.
IV also looks like Valley's to lose, although Wendell and Declo aren't pushovers. Valley has a solid record with some good wins, but got smoked by Soda last night.
III is a toss up. Ambrose, Nampa Christian, and Melba are the top 3 teams, but New Plymouth and Cole Valley are competitive as well. Ambrose won state at the 1AD1 level last year, and they've been impressive this year, their guards are very talented.
St Maries will likely prevail in the north again, unless Grangeville can work some district magic. St Maries might be the best team in all of 2A, as they brought back a lot of guys from last year if I remember, and are sitting undefeated as well.
Overall it should be a fun state tourney when March rolls around, with my limited knowledge I'd rank em as follows
1 St Maries, 2 Ambrose, 3 North Frem, 4 West Side, 5 Valley, 6 Nampa C, 7 Melba, 8 Soda Sp/Bear Lake
I like it. I agree about N Fremont. Their schedule doesnt look like it was a tough one but never count out the defending champs.
2A in the west is pretty interesting. Melba, Nampa Christian, and Ambrose are the top 3 teams. And I would put them up against anyone in the state. They are sharpening each other. So far in district play, Ambrose has had Melba’s number, NC beat Ambrose, and Melba beat NC. Could come down to matchups in the district tournament. And all 3 could actually make the state tournament. Cole Valley and New Plymouth could always surprise as well. They play tough. And Marsing has one of the best 2A players in the state. Top to bottom, it’s the deepest 2A district in the state. West Side and Bear Lake are really solid in the East. But I’m keeping an eye on Soda. They seem to be peaking at the right time. Fremont is running away with their league. Not their fault, but I wonder if the easier schedule hurts them in the long run. Valley will probably win the central, but they’ve had the easiest schedule of a district leader of them all. The central 3A is way down this year and didn’t give those 2A’s much of a fight, and that’s the bulk of their extensive non con schedule. Whoever comes out of that league will have a tough time at state. St Maries is the toughest team to place. They will be tough as usual because of their physical play style. If state refs let them play without a lot of fouls called, they are a tough out. But the lack of similar opponents to any other district makes them the biggest mystery.
