There's been some talk about 2A basketball on here, so thought I might bring up some 3A as well. I might need some help with the Northern teams; all I can go off is their records and scores.
I-II: Right now Priest River is at the top of the conference, but it looks like Bonners Ferry has been on a winning streak lately. Based on how they've done against common opponents, I'd bet on Bonners Ferry winning out in the conference. I'd love to hear anyone else's take on this as I really don't have a clue.
III: This conference is always a crazy one down the stretch! Adding McCall this year sure shakes things up a bit, especially since they and Fruitland are both undefeated in conference but have still yet to play each other as their previously scheduled game was postponed. McCall has a pretty limited schedule as it is - I assume this is all due to Covid? Fruitland has some impressive wins, including all of their conference opponents so far, South Fremont early on, and a close game with Middleton. They also have some weird losses like Firth and Buhl. Could get interesting here... Regardless, this conference gets two automatic bids to state. I'd pick McCall and Fruitland to take those spots with the rest battling it out for the play-in game against the North (which I'd favor 3C to win over 1/2B).
IV: Early on I would have probably picked Kimberly to win, especially with Gooding having some unexpected losses, like one to American Falls. I would not be surprised to see any team win this conference. Comstock has his guys playing strong and they've not beaten everyone in their conference at least once. Winn's guys in Buhl have also been coming on strong. Filer has been up and down, but have a couple quality wins. Anderson is a great coach who will have his guys prepared come district tourney time. Kimberly is definitely down from last year, but they're playing well in most games. This might be the most level conference right now, but unfortunately their level of competition is lower than in districts 5 and 6 so the district 4 runner up will likely not make it to state.
V: This is a crazy conference. Brower went to American Falls, who is now playing the highest level of basketball they've seen there in years. Coombs has the most disciplined team and Marsh has the most athletic team. Snake and Marsh will battle it out, but don't be surprised if American Falls pulls an early upset in the first round. Marsh just beat Snake by three, but Coombs will have his guys focused and a strong gameplan for districts. Marsh can shoot the lights out, so it could go either way. My pick is Snake to win this conference, but wouldn't be surprised if Marsh pulls it off.
VI: This will be the most entertaining district tournament. Sugar has been down after losing 10 seniors, but Freeman's kids always play hard for him. They just put up 80 on South the other night! Then beat Kimberly the following night - they seem to be coming together at just the right time. They've lost more games than they typically do, but many of those games have been by less than 5 points. South is under new leadership this year. All I heard coming out of East Idaho going in to this season is that this senior class is loaded and maybe the best class to come out of Saint Anthony in recent memory. Pope did a great job building that program. It will be interesting to see if the new guy can take "the chosen ones" past Sugar and Teton. South has put up a lot of points, but have also give up 80 points a few times. Teton is another loaded class. They seem to be playing well right now as they also just beat South. I'm excited to see if Sugar is able to push for another conference win this week when they face Teton. Any of these three teams could win it, but right now I'd put my money on Teton winning and South heading to the play-in game.
Play-in: Whoever wins the 5/6 play-in game will win against 4B. Either way, I think a lack of discipline and defensive structure will lead to Marsh or Snake (whoever their runner-up is) beating South Fremont in the play-in game and taking the final spot at state.
My predictions then for the bracket:
Game 1: Gooding vs Marsh
Game 2: Teton vs 3C
Game 3: Fruitland vs Snake
Game 4: Bonners Ferry vs McCall
