I watched a few games at the Madison tournament over the weekend. It looks like a lot of teams are still in the discovery stage. I did notice a couple of transfers to Sugar Salem.
Sugar has a very athletic transfer from North-Fremont if I heard correctly who had an amazing baseline dunk. He appeared to only be a little over 6 feet. Another kid moved from Rocky and one from Bonneville. They played pretty well. I did not see Madison but heard they were good. Rigby looked good as well as Preston. Minico was missing a couple of key players as well as Century and neither team looked as good as I expected. Tournaments this week in Pocatello and Preston and College of Idaho the following week. Also caught some of the smaller school tournament in Marsh Valley and was very impressed with Mackey. Bear Lake, Carey, West Side, Soda, Marsh Valley and alot of the area 4a JV teams were some that I caught a peek at.
I caught a couple games at the Madison tournament. I also watched Sugar on Friday and they played pretty well. Sugar had a lot of kids dressed and it seems like coach Freeman had a task in playing everybody. The Hale kid from Blackfoot was very impressive, and scored all of Blackfoot's first half points against Sugar. I would guess he finished with well over 30 points, fun kid to watch. Rigby looked good on both ends of the court as their youth is gaining experience, and they were without Togiai. Preston is solid even after graduation with another good big kid in Hyde. Poky looked much improved. Hillcrest graduated heavy, but the Austin kid looked good.. Century was missing Harwell and looked lost.. Madison looked like Madison.. Highland looked scrappy and frustrated at the same time.. Minico looked decent but not as good as I thought they would.. No sign of the new Thuder Ridge school, and I'm not familier with any kids that played varsity at Hillcrest or Bonneville that are switching to the new school, so things could be slow there for a few years.... At the end of the day summer ball doesn't mean much, but it is sure fun to watch.
Treasure Valley starts this weekend with the Centennial Tournament, followed by C of I, then Rocky Shootout. My guess is Borah and Rocky will be the ones to watch. Meridian could be up there and Boise has Cole Alton. You are right though, you never can tell with the summer, but it's fun to guess! Typically a lot of the better known players are gone to camps and things too, so hard to really get a good read.
Watched the Preston tournament and it looks like Preston will contend again as they looked really good even though Hyde their 6'6" jr post is having an MRI the first of the week with a possible ACL suffered in their last game of the Madison tourney. They are really bolstered with a terrific jr. transfer move in from West Side I believe his name is Hobsen who shot lights out from the 3 and the free throw line. Smellie will play at the next levil and is as athletic as older brother (the six footish point guard threw down some incredible dunks) and they have alot of nice pieces in Dunne and younger Parker etc. Madison continues to impresss even though they are not very big. Boise was there and struggled against several teams. Minico had a couple nice wins against Logan and Elko as well as Boise. I still like Rigby and did not get to see Hillcrest.
I don't think he was there but I was to far away to get a good look at the standout soph last year at state. Probably not as they were beatable. I know Minico and Preston will be there and suspect Rigby and Madison will also be there as well as Twin Falls and Century. I cannot imagine a top levil team not coming to that event. Highland must be way down Minico's youngsters beat their JV's by 40 points in Pocy last week and they only had seven kids suited up on the varsity at the Madison tournament. As always you don't know how many pieces are missing on the teams.
St. Maries has been looking tough. Lost to a very good Pullman, WA team by 4-5. Strong Freshman group coming up with a few bigs to help out in the center.
On another note the McCliment-Call twins out of Post Falls are transferring to University (WA). I get why kids transfer out but it's sad to see.
Saw a day and a half of the games in Boise this week Borah lost to Rocky in the championship of the 8 pool winners in a close game. Minico lost to Bishop Kelly in the 3rd bracket pool championship. Rigby played well Borah bested Boise in the second round of the top pool and Rocky eeked out a tight game against Preston in same round and in the loosers bracket Boise with Ault having a nice game had their way with a tired Preston team. I know Twin was in the championship of the 2nd bracket and Vallivue in the 4th bracket but can't remember who they played or the outcome. From my vantage point nobody is unbeatable and most are not at full rosters including Magnussen for Borah and Rigby's power forward etc who were not there.
Thanks Axes. Saw some of the games this weekend and I agree, nobody is unbeatable. I like those seasons, talent across the board makes for fun games to watch. I heard Rocky won C of I also, but had two teams playing, so not sure how that was divided up. All of this Summer Ball makes me excited for November.

What is everybody else seeing?

Axes, did Boise have Alton? Do you know if any of the Eastern ID teams are coming to play in the Rocky tournament?
