I'll put some thoughts together on this week though it will admittedly be just pretty much SIC.
Mtn. View vs. Boise in the early game this week at Dona Larsen. I've gotta say that Mtn. View came out way better than I thought they would offensively against Capital last week and I don't think Boise is going to slow it down much. The Mavs defense played a 2nd game in a row (against two tough and very different offenses) of disciplined ball....they've for awhile put together a stud crew of linebackers and this year isn't any different. Boise can make it interesting with their passing game but I think only Mtn. View can beat themselves in this one.
Capital vs. Rocky should be pretty good but after watching both of them I think Rocky is just better. Rockies junior QB has a pretty good arm though I noticed their O-line is pretty susceptible to speed in outside rushing and Capital does have some kids that can move. Capital does play a lot of kids both ways so if this is close in the end I could see that playing a part.
Meridian vs. Borah has potential in that Meridian is moving their program in the right direction this year but they are going up against a team that took it to another level. Borah should win this one fairly easily but wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong and it's close.
Eagle vs. Skyview is along with the Capital/Rocky game the most intriguing to me. I don't know if they can stop each other and if not could see a century in total points. I am going to go with Eagle because I do think they are stronger on D but I truthfully have not watched enough of them yet.
And, a gratuitous highlight video. Mtn. View has been very fortunate to have a videographer who has put these together after every game (win or lose) for a few years now and while I know other teams try and do the same this guy is unique. The locker room speeches through the years are great.
The only game in 5A that I see as interesting is the Rocky/ Capital game. However, I have to believe that Rocky is the class for now of the SIC Rocky over Mountain View, and Mountain View over Capital, so I would have to believe that rocky is really the better team. However in the final game of the season Borah may have something to say about that....
Mountain View over Boise (easily)
Eagle over Skyview (fairly easy)
Borah over Meridian.
I do not see any games in the East that are really intriguing (and that is coming from a Highland fan)
and I do not know enough about the Washington Schools to even make a venture on what games in the North should be good. Until then enjoy the games.....
This seems like an easy week to pick... but who knows! Thats why they play the game. My picks mirror your guys.
MV over boise - (this could get REALLY ugle)
Eagle over Skyview - shouldn't be close if Eagle shows up
Borah over Meridian - could get ugly quick
Rocky over Capital - Hoping Capital can keep it close, but Rocky could break it open early.
Looks like the Thunder has left the stadium.Sorry But I see Eagle only winning 2 more games this year.Thats against Boise and Timberline
@saltyload I don't disagree one bit! They were not impressive against Borah or Skyview in any phase of the game. I think They could be competitive with Capital depending on the defense, but other than that, they will get smoked by Rocky and MV.
That was a fantastic video! The kids faces as the coach yells "RIP IT!". Good times!
Went to the Eagle/Skyview game with my son who plays for Mtn. View and who wanted to scout them a bit and I just thought it would be a good game and man it didn't disappoint. With half the players of Eagle and giving up a lot of pounds on the line Skyview just hit harder....their back is a beast who willed himself yardage. I don't think Eagle was looking past Skyview but just didn't know what to do against an offense that is multi-dimensional. They lined up quite a bit in a 3-4 and a couple versions of the nickle but couldn't beat them to the edge and Skyview did a good job sealing it. They eventually went to a 4-3 when Skyview started pounding the ball chewing up clock but it didn't matter. Impressive last drive by Skyview to go up two possessions. Eagle is still very much a threat over the top and they started finding success sweeping outside of their left tackle but just not enough.
I am a bit surprised Rocky jumped all over Capital like they did and looks like the Borah/Meridian game was quite a good one. As someone said above that's why they play the game....maybe a bit more parity in the league than most anyone thought.
Zen: Nice call on the Skyview Eagle game. I would have never thunk it... Maybe there is more parity than I thought.... I enjoy your insights...
Instead of ripping paper at pregame, Mtn View should review defense assignments at halftime. Eagle beats up Mtn View in the second half.
