    Sugar tournament

Congratulations to Sugar city for ruining a great tournament. I wrestled in this tournament when I was a kid it’s always been a good tournament with great competition now it’s a dual tournament with not one team with a full roster what a joke! Everybody knows sugar city hired Scott Davis was known to be the most winning dual coach in high school history I guess when you invite a bunch of small schools that can’t fill a roster that’s how you get to the top way to pad your stats coach

What they changed the John Berry tournament? Why? That sugar tournament has been running for like 50 years with awesome small school competition. Why break something that works?

I don't know how this new coach can make it any more obvious as to why he is at sugar... It's a shame what he has done to sugar, the sugar tournament, and coach gliders returning state champion team. Unfortunately, it looks like good intentions by the former coach are being destroyed by the new coach or might as well call him "The Collector." At the beginning of the season, I had Sugar, Snake, And south battling it out for 1st. With what I have seen, Sugar will be lucky to walk away with the 4th place trophy at best.

That being said, I must say South Fremont has looked incredible!

To whom it may concern: A "Duals Tournament" was never our preference for our tournament this season. The reason we were left with that option is the calendar rotation, a new tournament that took many teams someplace else and the schedule being incomplete when I took over in late summer. To keep our tournament with the ability to provide a number of matches for the competitors we decided to go to a duals format. We were cut down to 7 teams after the schedule change and could not field more teams...we certainly tried! Anyway, we felt the only way to provide more matches for the competitors was to go to a "Duals Tournament," so that's what we did. I must say, our Athletic Director told me there was more noise and excitement in our gym than previous years because of this format. However, we did ask the coaches from the teams what they preferred next year and hopefully we can field more teams. We appreciate the other teams that attended our tournament this season. Best of luck the rest of your season!

The different tournament you're referring to, correct me if I'm wrong, is the Aberdeen tournament? It's just hard to believe so many 3A teams left because of a 2A tournament... Also, I thought I remembered the news breaking about the new head coach at sugar late spring (around the beginning of May). If that is true, it would have left you quite the time to prepare for the upcoming season and finalize things to ensure the sugar tournament wasn't changed for reasons that seem selfish...

Palestra: What is a matter with you and why are you so fixated on me? Why would my AD lie to me? Also, just because I didn't physically come to Sugar City until October doesn't mean I wasn't trying to work on completing an unfinished schedule, or making contact with our wrestlers? I even attended two different wrestling camps with our Sugar-Salem wrestlers during the summer months. Also, this isn't 1880, we have computers, cell phones, etc., etc It doesn't matter where I am living to try and make contacts in completing a schedule. You can ask Coach Glider, he knows I was trying to get teams and the situation we were placed in with a change of dates for our tournament. The Aberdeen Tournament was put on the same weekend that the Sugar-Salem Tournament was usually run. This was no fault of anyone's that this happened. The calendar rotation changed a bit. Anyway, we worked cooperatively with Aberdeen to try and get teams, unfortunately it still did not work out well. Anyway, we were left with few teams coming on the weekend of Jan. 31 & Feb. 1. This was true from the very beginning! Our AD tried hard to get teams as he was in a better position, knowing other AD's. Of course I was new and didn't know any coaches or teams. I did send out numerous emails though. We tried, that's all we could do! When we knew we only had a few teams the decision was made to go to a dual meet format. This way we could insert wrestlers from other teams in open weights and wrestle every team so getting more matches per wrestler (each wrestler got 8 matches). A bracketed individual tournament did not allow for this with the teams we had, and there would have been fewer matches. We wanted to keep the match count up. With this said, what business or special interest is it of yours anyway? You come on a public forum, hiding behind a made-up "nickname" and verbally bash me...why? What axe do you have to grind? I don't know who you are? If I did, maybe I might understand where you are coming from? For your information, I have totally enjoyed my time working with our Sugar-Salem Wrestlers. They are great kids and work very hard. I have also enjoyed the parents and fellow coaches I work with. Coach Glider has also been extremely helpful to me. We communicate frequently, almost daily. Anyway, all have been very welcoming...very nice! This is an absolutely great community here in Sugar City. I hope whatever is bothering you and making you so wanting to criticize me and disrupt our program will subside. If you were man enough to let me know who you are, then maybe we could have a conversation. Since it doesn't appear you have the guts to make that happen I would appreciate your just sticking to your own business. Leave me and our wrestling program alone...Thank you!

When Idaho changed from match limit to date limit it made it a far better schedule to have dual tourneys instead of individual tourneys. Check out the brackets this week at state. The smart schedulers will have their kids with 50-60 matches while the not smart ones will have their kids with 25-35. I’m guessing this added to why teams left the Sugar tourney...just a chance to get more matches. I dont know anything about the attacks on Sugar coach but seems like he a gave legitimate reasoning for the change. If I was scheduling a high school season I would schedule prestigious Rollie Lane and Tiger Grizz to give my best wrestlers a chance to make those podiums and all of the other tourneys on my schedule would be duals.

We went to the Sugar tournament in 2018 and liked getting a chance to wrestle some 3A Eastern Idaho teams. The following year 2019, when we went back, there were 8 teams missing?! The entry fee was higher than any other tournament and if 3A Eastern Idaho teams weren’t coming then we couldn’t justify it, just to see Sugar. instead we headed to Gooding Grappler Duals with seven 3A schools. That’s probably the new tournament that hurt the Sugar tournament this year, but it‘s been sliding downhill for a couple of years.
