What does it take to get to that next level? Why don't we see more of our talented kids moving on to the college scene? At any level? What are they missing?
Lack of local programs plays a part for sure. I also notice a lack of interest in HS schools wrestlers to go on to the next level. For those who do they really don’t know how to go about it, how to get their name out there etc..
we have had several multiple time State Champs in the last 6 years and few of them wanted to go on. We have 5 competing in college now.
Drake Foster Wyoming, Seth Mcleod Oregon State University, Ciera Foster Oklahoma City University , Braydon Huber University of Mary, Jorden Grimm Providence
From my post in the "Off Season Wrestling" thread:
Off-season wrestling, specifically in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, is absolutely VITAL to the development of the most "next-level attractive" top-tier wrestlers. Idaho's far-and-away best wrestlers over the years, those who did great in high school and then carried on that success in college and beyond, spent their springs and summers competing in FS/GR.
Chris Owens
Charles Burton
Bo Rushton
Jared Lawrence
Jake Rosholt
Jared Rosholt
Adam Hall
Kirk Smith
Jon Jay Chavez
Hayden Tuma
Tanner Hall
Those are just off the top of my head, and only include those who have had NCAA D1 and/or USAW/UWW prominence. I know I've missed some others who also did very well at those levels, and if you add NAIA and NJCAA prominence, the list probably grows by a factor of ten, and again the VAST (99%+) majority of those wrestlers also wrestled FS/GR to round out their skill sets and attract college coaches' attention and investment.
Parents take heed: if your local club focuses only, or even predominantly (more than an even split) on Folkstyle, your young wrestlers are being sold short. Demand more, or (if you're serious about the investment beyond just something good/fun for your kids to do) find a different club.
The Minico kid didn't "beat" Mederios, the officials allowed a 100% illegal move in overtime and robbed him of his third title. Mederios wrestles at York College, which is an NAIA school. Not sure if the Minico kid went on to wrestle anywhere.
@igrapple40 Bahahahahaha still salty about that? Who has the medal Mederos or Daniels? Because I'm pretty sure it was Daniels at the top of the podium.
HS Fan Eddie Daniels is who your thinking of and his is wrestling at Clackamas Community College.
Some others I have seen or know about are; Krede Peterson Eastern Oregon, and Jordan Grimm University of Providence (Great Falls, MT) Krede and Jordan are NAIA as well and have run into Mederios and other Idaho home grown products at various College Open Tournaments this year. Such as D1 Utah Valley State College, William Edelblute, Braydon Huber DII Mary College, ND. Sam Eckhart Northeastern CC, Dawson Barfuss Northwest CC. Also John Hensley is at University of Providence also @ 197lbs Ranked #7 nationally for NAIA.DN
Drake Foster - Wyoming (although I heard he was transferring this year) Demetrius Romero and Jason Gissel at Utah Valley University .. lots of our Idaho boys move on but I agree we need U of I to step up and give us a solid college team locally, especially with the girls starting to grow! I would prefer to keep my boys in Idaho!
They are missing local colleges with a wrestling program to go to!!!!

We only have five wrestlers currently competing in college? hhhhmmmmm doubtful

@The Other Idaho Brayden Di*kinson is at Mary
maybe 5 from post falls? I can think of 6 others off the top of my head recent graduates, not including older guys
My mistake I meant 5 from Post Falls not Idaho. To my point we had at least 5 more who generated college attention and chose not to go.

I know Mederious MOHO is wrestling at a DII (?) in Neb. What happened to the kid from Minico that beat him.

Daniels went to Klakamas
I know boise state dropped the program and we are all upset about that. Come on U of I. We have awesome wrestlers here

Thanks for the info and good luck to all them wrestlers
You also have Jared Walker at D1 Chattanogga Who wrestled in the line up last year but is injured this year. KC Randels who is at Wyoming.
